Merry Christmas!

Welcome to the 2007 edition of the Hackbarth Christmas newsletter!

2007 has been an eventful year for our family. We've been overwhelmed with God's abundant blessings. We've seen Him do some amazing things in our lives. And now we're anxiously anticipating seeing what God has in store for us as He just called us to relocate to Austin, Texas last month.
It's been an adventure, that's for sure!

We hope you have a wonderful Christmas, a happy New Year and a blessed 2008!

Below are a few highlights and photos from this past year...

Austin-tatious!

Just 5 short weeks ago Dave and Jonah and I packed up our house and moved to Austin, TX. It was a tough decision, but one that we feel good about, knowing that we're following God's calling and plan for our lives. (If you're saying "that's news to me", click here for details).

Jonah did wonderfully on the road trip down here! He's a great little traveling buddy. Here he is enjoying some late night television in the king sized bed at the hotel on our second night of our trip...

In other news Dave has a job... praise God! Crazy story... the week before we left for Austin, Dave emailed his old work associates telling them "it was nice working with you, we're moving, etc. etc." The next day his former National Sales Manager contacted him and basically said we've got an immediate opening, the job's yours if you want it. Well come to find out right around the day that Dave sent out that email, the guy who was supposed to take the job here mysteriously backed out of it. Hmmm... God-incidence?! So Dave was able to start working about a week after we got here. Awesome, huh? I love how God works like that!

I'm also excited to announce that I'm finally officially just a stay-at-home mom! Dave and I decided that in order to be able to devote myself fully to taking care of Jonah and starting my photography business down here, that I could quit my part-time work-from-home admin job. I'm really looking forward to finding some fun weekly activities for Jonah and I at the library and places like that, hanging out with Jonah's cousins, and getting connected at our new church, Gateway.

It's been a transition getting to know this new area... the first couple of weeks it was an adventure just going to the grocery store! Thank goodness for GPS! But it's been a lot of fun. We're living with Dave's parents until we get our townhouse rented out, then hopefully we'll be able to start house shopping. Woo hoo!

We've been able to get out and see some of the sights around Austin. Dave's sister Bekah has graciously shown me around to many of the shopping malls and outlets. :~) And last week we all went to the Trail of Lights at Zilker Park which helped get us all in the Christmas spirit. I tell ya, after 29 winters in Chicago, it's taken a mental shift for me to think about Christmas shopping while wearing flip flops.

And here's a rare photograph of the ever elusive armadillo playing the banjo. Why, of course! They are after all the state mammal of Texas.

So that's the latest on our journey to Austin. Please let us know if you ever want to come visit. We miss you all terribly and would love to share the official state snack with you... tortilla chips and salsa! Hopefully we'll have an official guest room soon, too!

Here are some other fun facts about Texas that might come in handy in case you're ever on a gameshow:
  • Texas is the second-largest state in both area and population
  • Texas is one of only four states that were independent nations before becoming a constituent state of the U.S.
  • Austin is the fourth largest city in Texas with a population of 710,000. (We're living just north of Austin)
  • Texas nicknames: the Lone Star State, the Cowboy State and the Friendship State
  • State flower: bluebonnet
  • State mammals: small - armadillo, large - Texas longhorn, and flying - the Mexican free tailed bat (ew!)
  • State molecule: the buckyball (who knew?)
  • State reptile: the horny toad
  • State slogan: "It's like a whole other country" (you can actually get that on your license plate)

a HUGE thank you!!!

We want to send out a sincere and HUGE thank you to everyone who helped us pack and move last month! We could NOT have done it without you! We pray that many many blessings find you in 2008!

Thank you Mom & Dad, Rachael, Rick & Tanya, Jeff & Sheridan, Lora & Brandon, my new friend Amanda, Lee, Randy, Jim & Bekah... there are no words. You guys are AMAZING! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Jonah's World

"Uh, roger that!" Here's our little tough guy in January... only 4 months old and already playing video games. They grow up so fast!
And here are my two tough guys dressed like twins for daddy's birthday.
This is my absolute favorite picture of me and Jonah!
Seriously. Does it get any cuter than this?
Here's Jonah back in April. Apparently he liked his peas. I'm just not sure which he liked better... eating them or bathing in them. (Here's a video of Jonah's 1st cereal back in February).
We went to visit big sister Faith's tree in April at Great Grandpa Arbizzani's park. Here's Jonah riding a giant armadillo on our trip to Texas to visit Dave's family in May. We took a road trip in June up to Wisconsin and stayed with some friends who live on Knight Lake. It was absolutely gorgeous! Fourth of July! And yes, that is a faux-hawk... on the big one and on the little one. Jonah's all time favorite pastime: swinging! (Click here to see a video of the crazy little monkey back in April).
Jonah testing out his 1st birthday present - a Bounce & Spin Zebra! What a big boy! Here's our family at Jonah's Curious George themed 1st birthday party. (Click here to see his birthday party slideshow).
Jonah loved his personal 1st birthday cake... shaped like a banana! Thanks Grandma Peggy! Jonah took his first independent steps the week after his birthday. Here are some of his first steps caught on "tape"...

We've been working with Jonah to learn sign language since he was about 7 or 8 months old. At his first birthday he knew about 25 signs! Here he is watching one of his "Signing Time" videos.
Our community group had a going away party for us before we left for Texas. Mike has this sweet drum set in his basement. Jonah was a natural! Hmmm... I wonder where he gets it?
Grandma & Grandpa got Jonah this totally adorable rocking chair for his 1st birthday. I finally got his 1st birthday portraits done at 14-1/2 months. And finally, here's Jonah in front of the Christmas tree. Merry Christmas everybody!

Babies! Babies! Babies!

We were so excited to welcome so many new and adorable faces into the world in 2007!

Erin Elizabeth graced the world with her adorableness on January 16. Here she is with big sister Reegan. Congrats John & Becky!

Congrats Jim & Bekah (Dave's sister) & big sister Katarina on the birth of Carter James, born July 16. We finally got to meet little Mr. Carter man on Thanksgiving, the day after we arrived in Texas.

Congratulations to our friends Mike & Karla on the birth of Ian Michael on August 26. Jonah and I got to meet Ian when we was just a few weeks old. Can you tell his daddy's a drummer?

We welcomed the oh-so-cute Zachary Christopher into the world on September 25. Congrats Harry & Shannon, proud big brother Tyler and big sisters Emily & Abigail!

Congrats to Dan, Erica & big sister Mya on the birth of Taylor Marie on November 12.

Wow! So many babies this year! Congratulations everyone!!!

And the two shall become one...

I hadn't realized how many of our friends got married this year until I made this list!

Our good friends Mike & Karla were married on March 31st. We're so happy for you two! Congratulations! Mike & Karla's wedding was especially exciting for me because I got to shoot my first official wedding as their "second shooter". My friend and mentor Steve VanGheem was the main photographer. I shot one other wedding with Steve in May before I was out on my own. Thanks Steve for sharing your time and wisdom!

On May 27th we attended the wedding of Doug & Amanda. Doug's family has been friends with my family for I think as long as I've been alive. Congratulations Doug & Amanda!

On June 10th I shot my first official all-by-myself wedding for the adorable and fascinating Colin & Shay. I'm so happy with how the pictures turned out and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet some wonderful new friends in the process!

I was honored to have the privilege of photographing the intimate wedding of our old high school friend Dustin. He was married to his beautiful bride Amy on August 17th. We had so much fun hanging out with you and your families for the weekend! Congratulations Dustin & Amy!

My cousin Bridget got married in September in Ohio. We weren't able to attend the wedding, but they did come to town to visit for their wedding shower and I was able shoot some engagement photos for them. We ended up at the mall because it was raining, but we had fun riding the carousel and being a little ridiculous in public. Congrats Nick & Bridget!

Our good friends Andrew & Brianna were married on September 28th. I grew up across the street from Andrew and we had a humorous reunion a few years ago when we both ended up hanging with the same crowd at church. Andrew and Dave became fast friends and even worked together for a while. When Andrew and Bri announced that they were getting married, we couldn't have been happier for them! And when Andrew asked Dave to be the best man, he was honored. Dave did a great job on the speech... we laughed, we cried. It was perfect... as was the whole day.

Congratulations and many blessings to all of you newlyweds! We pray for long and healthy marriages for all of you!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

Love,
Dave, Lisa & Jonah
